It must be hard hanging out with Kanye if you’re not dressed appropriately.  Here’s what he had to say recently, texting while driving:

- Just driving through the city and I see a few thing I hate…

- I hate button up shirts with hoodies

- I hate hoodies with sport coats

- I hate sport coats with button up shirts, jeans and dress shoes

- I hate khaki trench coats with jeans and off brand work out sneakers

- I Hate big ass striped scarves

- I hate long ass sideburns with the line up RnB beard

- …all this in 5 blocks

- Detest

- #I’m on my snob

Just in time for the G.O.O.D. Music compilation, Q-Tip has signed with Kanye’s label for the upcoming release of his fourth album The Last Zulu.  Q-Tip had a hand in producing two of the tracks off of last year’s Watch the Throne and apparently the two decided to formalize the partnership.  As the elder statesman in Kanye’s stable, Q-Tip brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table, not to mention some of the most classic hip hop albums ever created.  Maybe we’ll be lucky enough to see another Midnight Marauders before it’s all said and done.

BREAKING NEWS: Kanye West has signed on to appear in the upcoming season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Whether he really likes this girl or he’s looking for someone new to upstage is up for debate.  Either way he’s going to get a hell of a lot of free marketing for the upcoming G.O.O.D. Music compilation.  Well-played Kanye.

It’s All G.O.O.D./The Return of Yeezy

Tags

Kanye West threw one hell of a one-two combination between My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Watch the Throne. In the wake of such a sustained period of cutting edge, creative output, there’s always the fear, and, inherently, the danger, that an artist will burn out, suffer from “writer’s block” or just plain suck on their next outing. As with Watch the Throne, there’s a lot of hype circulating around the first compilation from the artists housed under Kanye’s G.O.O.D. Music imprint, along with the pressure such a name implies. Will the music actually be GOOD? Or will Kanye eat his own tail in the rarefied penthouse apartment suites, VIP lounges and fashion runways where he spends his time, sucking up all of his own air and that of the Yes men around him? Fortunately for us, Yeezy’s recent triumphs mean that there’s no reason to be humble. Yet again, Ye steps up to the plate and knocks another one out of the park. Starting with a bonkers sample from danehall legend Fuzzy Jones, Big Sean and Pusha T throw down a few straight-to-the-pleasure-center verses before Kanye comes in on an 80s synth-break and 2 Chainz closes out the track “drunk and high at the same time/drinkin’ champagne on the airplane.” The lyrics and music are pure, infectious fun made for rolling around with the windows down and for anyone who was worried, it looks like Yeezy will be tucking your whole summer in once again.

All the missteps and feet in mouth that have dogged Kanye West throughout his career clearly haven’t soured him to the taste of controversy, and, truth be told, probably taught him the value of a well-placed insult. In his latest opus, Kanye drops what is probably the best diss of the year so far against Kris Humphries:

“And I’ll admit, I fell in love with Kim
‘Round the same time she had fell in love wit’ him
Well, that’s cool, baby girl, do ya thing
Lucky I ain’t have Jay drop ‘im from the team”

Ye also strangely gives props to Wiz Khalifa:

“And the whole industry wanna fuck yo’ old chick
Only nigga I got respect for is Wiz”

Kanye also makes some new enemies with his fur-be-damned chorus, and the song’s title, which the pharmaceutical maker isn’t too pleased about:

“Tell PETA my mink is draggin’ on the floor”

Looks like Yeezy’s back.

Big Pimpin’ Lawsuit

Tags

, ,

Years after the release of Jay Z classic Big Pimpin’ the nephew of Egyptian composer Baligh Hamdi has filed a lawsuit against Hov for the unauthorized sample of his uncle’s song Khosara, Khosara that appears on the track. Hamdi’s nephew Osama Ahmed Fahmy is attempting to collect revenue from album and concert ticket sales. A judge has ruled that the statue of limitations has expired but Fahmy is arguing that because of his lack of proficiency in English, he was misled by EMI lawyers. Part of the ruling states that concert revenue may still be retrievable if it’s determined that Big Pimpin’ is responsible for concert ticket sales. To be continued…

More on Jay Z at Carnegie Hall

“The repeated insistence that tonight will “make history” seems a lot more plausible at the finale, which includes what will almost certainly be the universe’s only instance of an entire Carnegie Hall crowd rapping the first verse of “Juicy,” unaccompanied by anything but a couple scratches to suggest a beat.”

Check out Nitsuh Abebe’s full article on the event.

With guests Alicia Keys, Nas and a 36-piece orchestra in tow, Hov brought a lot of class to the hallowed hall. A beautiful post-pregnancy Beyonce attended the performance and witnessed this show-stopping ode to young Blue Ivy Carter:

BERLIN - FEBRUARY 26: British singer and song...

British indie darling Florence Welsh of Florence and the Machine nearly burned down her hotel after a night on the town with Kanye West in New York City. The two along with Lykke Li had been drinking downtown, Florence reports that she had around 17 dirty martinis, when she returned to her room and passed out.  Upon awakening, she noticed she had chipped a tooth and the wall of the Bowery Hotel where she was staying was charred to a crisp.  Her book had caught fire from a tea candle, there was a bucket of water on the floor and the drink bill for Welsh, Yeezy, Lykke and apparently the entire bar was enough to make the fire seem meager.  Shake it out Florence!

Kanye Blows Up Australia

The audio’s not great but you can feel the heat coming off Kanye as he amps up this crowd at the Big Day Out Festival in Australia and the visuals are amazing. There seems to be more energy, if that’s even possible, since the end of The Throne tour, and a certain James Brown-ness in his ah-hahs. It must be good to be King.

Kanye West Updates

  • Kimberly Kardashian

Following Kanye’s recent infatuation with Kim Kardashian after The Throne concert in Los Angeles where an impartial observer commented that Kanye wanted to eat her up like a chicken wing, Amber Rose has weighed in on the rumors insinuating that the reason she and Kanye broke up was because of Kim’s furious sexting, and of course rampant infidelity between Kim and Kanye.

  • Kanye West took to Twitter to clarify that the name of his recently panned clothing line is Kanye West and not Dw, or Donda West, as was previously reported.  The Dw inscribed on the invitation was merely a homage to his late mother.

Kanye Threatens to Remove Section from Concert

One overzealous fan at the recent Throne concert in Tacoma, Washington got thrown out after reportedly throwing business cards onstage. Why he thought that was a good idea is anybody’ guess but Kanye eloquently makes his point in the video below saying, “These cubes rise 20 feet in the air. We’re riskin’ our lives up here, you can’t be throwin’ shit that we’re gonna slip on.” The guilty party stepped forward and was evicted from the show, leaving us with the following tweet:

“OMIGOD KANYE HATES ME! VERDICT STILL OUT ON JAY-Z, HE SEEMS PRETTY CHILL THO! #WatchTheThrone”

Jay gave one his biggest compliments yet to J. Cole in a recent MTV interview comparing his latest horse to Kanye West:

Kanye Dedicates Chi-Town Show to His Mother

English: Kanye West at the Vanity Fair kickoff...

Image via Wikipedia

Even with all the pomp and bombast that accompanies even the slightest mention of Kanye West, ‘Ye always manages to fall back to Earth on occasion.  At the peak of his game, it’s often easy to forget that Yeezy is indeed a mere mortal who gets by with a little help from his friends, which made it all the more touching at The Throne show in Chicago when he extended his thanks to Jay and Beyonce and his mother who raised him.

“It’s a glorious occasion. But right now I want ya’ll to put two fingers in the air right now. I wanna dedicate this show to the lady that brought me to Chicago at age three, the first black female chair of the English department at Chicago State University, Dr. Donda Claire Ann West. I know she up there looking down right now and she helped me get through these past four years, when America turned they back on me, when the world turned they back on me for tellin’ ya’ll the motherfuckin’ truth.”

As The Throne tour winds its way down, VOYR.com released its first behind-the-scenes episode of life backstage with Yeezy and Hova.  Kanye’s ego is on full display when he discusses who he’d like to attend his funeral.

“I always joked and I was like ‘Ok, I’m doing music but there is a bigger plan for me. At a certain point I wasn’t given this power for no reason and now it’s starting to open up,” Kanye says in the opening scenes. “I was just thinking about my funeral and stuff a couple days ago, thinking ‘Who would be at the funeral?’ People who I want at my funeral, I want like world leaders that were affected [by me], that said “Kanye gave me my shot here.” Or he pushed me or he told me to believe in myself. Or when I saw this it made me feel like that. I want to affect people like that when I pass away.”

For $4.99 you can get premium access to VOYR which at the moment appears to host this one video.

Frank Ocean on Jay and Kanye

Tags

,

You know you’ve made it when Jay Z and Kanye West are flying you across the country to collaborate and GQ names you one of their Men of the Year. Little did Frank Ocean know back in the day when he was struggling to make his first album that things would turn out like this. Ocean wrote this note explaining his current situation to his five-years-ago self:

Hey chris, your name is frank now..it’s a long story. your girlfriend is about to break up with you because of the long distance. it’s ok. & that job you’re working..well, you’re gonna have to work there for another year and some months.. & then you’re gonna get fired. you’re gonna work a couple more jobs after that too. nothing glamorous. kinkos and at&t if you really want the specifics. but you’re never gonna be homeless or starving. don’t worry you won’t fail and have to move back to new orleans either. you are gonna get your heartbroken though. twice. if it helps, the first one is gonna be worse than the second. contrary to how it feels, it won’t kill you. in fact it’s gonna help you write an album. yea, you finally finished an album. people like it man. you’re actually gonna write and record hundreds of songs. they won’t all be good and most ppl won’t think you’re talented at first, but you’re going to master your gifts. you’re going to become a lot stronger and wiser..even a little taller. be patient. i mean, you kind of have no choice. and be good to people. i don’t wanna spoil too much for you, but.. you’re on a plane right now to the east coast to work with kanye west & jay-z. it’s all working out kid. you made it.

Now Hova and Yeezy are giving him advice on music and sneakers…

All I Really Want (Rick Ross song)

Image via Wikipedia

Following recent health scares, Rick Ross gave an interview to Billboard Magazine where he recognizes the role of Jay Z in leading a generation of artists and giving them a framework for the come up.  In Ross’ words:

“I’ve most definitely been a fan of Hov and his whole movement. He gave a blueprint to a lot of young entrepreneurs…”

It’s easy to forget that Hov went from putting out mixtapes to becoming one of the biggest entertainment moguls this side of Russell Simmons with record labels, clothing lines, a basketball team and club chain under his wing.  The fact that he manages an empire daily while touring and working on material for a new album is mind-boggling in some ways.

Frank Ocean Sings Verses from Watch the Throne

Frank Ocean had to postpone the first New York dates on his solo tour recently after falling ill but returned as promised and sang his verses off Watch the Throne standouts No Church in the Wild and Sweet Baby Jesus. In a recent interview, Ocean mentioned that Kanye offered to guest on his forthcoming album but Ocean declined telling ‘Ye that he wanted to do his first album on his own.

Kanye and Nietzsche

Tags

,

One can’t help but wonder if philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche is turning in his grave right now as he realizes that Kanye West’s Stronger is derived from his maxim, “that which does not kill us makes us stronger,” but Virginia-based songwriter Vincent Peters has helped shed light on that fact with his recent lawsuit. Peters also wrote a track called Stronger based on the quote and claims that ‘Ye stole his song, hilariously citing that they both rhymed “stronger” with “longer,” and, coincidentally, they both reference supermodel Kate Moss. Though the Kate Moss reference is bizarre, Peters doesn’t have a leg to stand on in the face of this:

Occupy All Streets

Jay Z’s Rocawear was set to release a line of t-shirts that brazenly displayed the phrase “Occupy All Streets” in an effort to cash in on the Occupy movement that is sweeping the world.  With no mention of profit sharing with the protesters, Hov was savaged by activists and the press for what seemed like an insensitive and cynical ploy.  Since then all mention of the shirts has been removed from the Rocawear website and a search for the phrase only returns the tongue-in-cheek “Did you mean ‘lockup ball street’”.

CORRECTION: Occupy All Streets shirts are back on sale.

Ferrell reported that he was flattered when Kanye West approached him about using the quote and is now immortalized on the classic track.

Jay Z to Guest on New Rihanna Album

Jay Z and Rihanna go way back to the massive hit Umbrella and have a history since of paths crossing (do you remember a little song called Run This Town?). Now one of Rihanna’s producers let it slide that Jay will be the only guest artist featured on Rihanna’s upcoming release Talk that Talk. We have a feeling Jigga had a little something to do with Ri-Ri’s recent Coldplay collab as well.
