Will Ferrell “Flattered” by Sample

Will Ferrell at Walk Hard premiere

Watch the Throne‘s latest single Ni**as in Paris features the now ubiquitous sample from the film Blades of Glory where Will Ferrell’s character says:

“No one knows what it means, but it’s provocative… it gets the people going!”

Ferrell reported that he was flattered when Kanye West approached him about using the quote and is now immortalized on the classic track.

Watch the Throne Goes Platinum

Before The Throne show at Madison Square Garden on Monday night, executives from Island Def Jam records were on hand backstage to award Jay Z and Kanye West with platinum plaques for unheard-of-in-this-age sales of their now legendary Watch the Throne. Russell Simmons and Fabolous were there to celebrate and Hov and Yeezy predictably went on to rock the house.

Jay Z to Guest on New Rihanna Album

Jay Z and Rihanna go way back to the massive hit Umbrella and have a history since of paths crossing (do you remember a little song called Run This Town?). Now one of Rihanna’s producers let it slide that Jay will be the only guest artist featured on Rihanna’s upcoming release Talk that Talk. We have a feeling Jigga had a little something to do with Ri-Ri’s recent Coldplay collab as well.

New York Times Disses Kanye

PARIS, FRANCE - OCTOBER 01: Bianca Brandolini...

In case you missed the scathing New York Times review of Kanye West’s Dw fashion line, to summarize, for someone who pays as much lip service to fashion as Kanye does, he really missed the boat. There are a few funny bits about his ongoing complaints about coverage and a soundbite on the relative value of Mary-Kate and Ashley vs. Lindsay Lohan, but the overall consensus was better luck next time.

Jay and Kanye on VOYR

With The Throne tour launching tomorrow, we’re about to start seeing a whole lot of shaky-cam footage sprouting up all over the web. A healthy alternative to the seizure-producing video is a behind-the-scenes premium VOYR account to see professionally shot concerts, interviews, recipes and workout routines from Kanye himself.

Weirdest Hova Plug of the Month

Taking full advantage of his elder statesman of hip hop status, Jay Z made a cameo appearance in a cartoon infomercial promoting businessmen to children. Jay took the opportunity to plug the Sean Carter Foundation and his track Empire State of Mind. So bad it’s good and then bad all over again (but even worse the second time).

Kanye Gets Props from Coldplay

Hopefully his taste in baby names won’t bleed into Jay and Beyonce’s decision-making process, not to mention his taste in music.  In an early sign of dementia setting in, Chris Martin just said that The Strokes This Is It was the best album of the past 15 years.  In a moment of clarity he did get one thing right when he said that people like Kanye West were changing the way we listen to music.  Martin and Yeezy never mixed it up but he and Jay had a decent moment at the 2009 Grammys:

G.O.O.D. Music Is Coming

“Goodmusic. The album. Spring 2012″

In under 140 characters Kanye announced what might be the biggest album of the Spring. If you think about G.O.O.D. music’s roster, the album could potentially feature Big Sean, Kid Kudi, CyHi Da Prynce, Mos Def, Common, Mr. Hudson, Pusha T, John Legend and Kanye West himself. Kanye racked up big numbers last year when tracks from My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy began trickling out week after week on G.O.O.D. Fridays prior to the release of the album. A few of those tracks featuring Talib Kweli, Consequence, J. Cole, Lloyd Banks, Ryan Leslie and Keri Hilson didn’t make the album but we may see them again on this G.O.O.D. release.

The reality of lingerie, as opposed to the fan...

It actually isn’t a secret at all that Yeezy likes models, although it does bring to mind his near tweet of the year: “dating models I had to learn to like small dogs and cigarettes.” Now Kanye has landed in the motherload of the perfect people, the alien queen hive of angel-wing wearing models. On November 29th at 10pm, you’ll be able to get all your favorite things in one place. Kanye will be performing at the televised Victoria’s Secret lingerie fashion show, and probably collecting digits for his…new fashion line.

Kanye West @ Occupy Wall Street

Kanye West seemed oddly stoic in this video shot during his visit to the Occupy Wall Street demonstration last week.  Maybe it was because he just released an album that sings the praises of fiat capitalism and achieving the American Dream of wealth and prosperity and spending it on champagne and supermodels.  Russell Simmons on the other hand was quite eloquent in describing Kanye’s spiritual support of the protests and desire to remain above the political fray.  Watch Jesus walk below:

Jay Z Gives J. Cole a Pat on the Back

J.Cole Talks Jay-Z’s Input On His Album, Why H...

Back in 2009, J. Cole was the first artist Jay Z signed to Roc Nation.  It must have felt like an investment back then, one that he might not see for a while, or never, depending on the quality of production and the kind of head the new horse had on his shoulders.  Jay did what any good business owner does with new talent, he left him to work.  He checked in when the process started to drag on a little.  The two exchanged words in the press, Jay about Cole putting a little hustle on the album and Cole about it being up to Jay whether or not he would reward the album with a verse.  Fast-forward two years and Jay has a hit on his hands.  J. Cole’s Cole World: The Sideline Story hit number one on the sales charts this week, putting all doubts to rest.  In a press release today Jay publicly congratulated Cole for all his hard work.  Cole is living the dream.  You can see an excerpt from Jay’s press release below:

“J. Cole’s success is testament to amazing artist development and Cole’s hard work,” Jay-Z said in a press release. “I want to congratulate him on a #1 album and more importantly a great body of work.”

Jay Z Rises Above the Fray (again)

After Jay Z and Lil Wayne exchanged barbs in songs recently, MTV caught up with Hov to find out if he was planning to retaliate against Weezy for dragging his lady into the fray. Jigga, clearly in a position to relish his elder statesman status, told MTV that slinging dirt in hip hop is “sport” and didn’t see any reason to escalate.

Kanye West Wraps His Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

kanYe West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

After Kanye’s starling rise to celebrity superstardom, from Late Registration to the prog-rap opus of Watch the Throne, Ye has gone from humble beatmaker to musical icon, engineering some of the most iconic anthems of the past decade and even earning a reference to Jesus from none other than Jay Z in a verse off No Church in the Wild. Yeezy has a number of turning points in his career, from The Blueprint to his car accident to Jesus Walks, but his last solo album, the epic My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy set Kanye apart from his peers as a true pioneer in the game, a man with everything to lose who’s still willing to take chances on his vision. From Nicki Minaj’s introduction and the first piano chords and choral accompaniment on Dark Fantasy, Kanye’ ambitions were clear. What other rapper in the game can move back and forth between the hood and the hills so effortlessly? Mixing beats with orchestras has been done before but never on this scale. Kanye took the stage at Austin City Limits on Friday for the last show of the Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy tour and delivered another blowout performance, backed no less by a troupe of ballet dancers but stalking the stage solo most of the time. After all the drama has died down, the botched awards shows and presidential-level feuds, the loss of the women in his life who mattered, Kanye stood there alone on the precipice of another game change, leaving the audience wondering what comes next.

Jay Z and 9/11

With the 10-year anniversary of Jay Z’s seminal work The Blueprint and the ominous release date etched in our collective memory, some of the press revolving around the date took to examining how Jay Z managed to sell almost half-a-million units that week. Jay had been in the news a lot prior to the album’s release for the alleged stabbing of record exec Lance Rivera and the high-profile disses that were being shot his way by Nas, Jadakiss and Prodigy. Jay, the consummate hype man, had instigated the same level of mystery and excitement surrounding the release as on later albums and fans eagerly anticipated his triumph or failure with equal interest. The fact that the release coincided with 9/11 provided an aura of prophecy to the event, but in all reality, following the national tragedy fans likely sought comfort and strength in the words of an icon. And Jay Z delivered.

“]Cover of "The Blueprint 3 [Explicit]"

There’s a lot going on in Jay Z’s world these days.  Watch the Throne is out and the media parade surrounding it is kicking up controversy over Lil Wayne’s dis track, which Jay classily set aside saying that he was above it.  His upcoming tour with Kanye West as The Throne likely requires some behind the scenes heavy lifting and his and Kanye’s recent high velocity performance of Otis at the VMA’s got one fan so excited that he got up on stage only to be hustled down by two security guards in grey suits and sent to MTV’s basement cells for unruly fans and ugly pop stars.  And of course there was wifey Beyonce’s simple and understated yet profound announcement on live television that Hova was going to become a father.  Chances are he’s pretty amped up about the prospect and feeling tons of inspiration, enough to head right back into the studio to start laying down verses for a follow up to the Blueprint 3.  There is no definitive title or date for the project, but we do know that Frank Ocean has already laid down vocals for the album and producer No ID claims to have heard some material and given Jay beats for the new album

Kanye West: Ode to Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse at Bowery Ballroom 18

Image via Wikipedia

In the aftermath of the tragic death of Amy Winehouse, many musicians with an affinity for her music released remixes, covers and notes of sympathy in honor of the woman’s talent, style and body of work.  Now Kanye West has stepped up to the plate to deliver his tribute to the late blues artist and in the process spawned what is quite possibly the most amusing quote related to the wholly unamusing situation.  With regard to Kanye’s cover of the Amy Winehouse classic Back to Black, a source close to the project reported:

“It’s pretty emotive. It’s Kanye singing from the heart – with synthesizers.”

It’s hard to look at this and not see another cynical attempt at self-promotion, but coming from Kanye, in the wake of his larger than life celebrity, it’s almost impossible for him to do anything without the inevitable ripple effects of ego that come with the territory.

Jay Z to Perform at iHeart Radio Festival

Jay-Z

Cover of Jay-Z

In a prelude to The Throne tour, Jay Z will perform a solo warm up at the iHeart Radio Festival in Las Vegas.  Billed as the largest live music event ever in the history of radio, the iHeart Radio Festival is already hosting Lady GaGa, Coldplay and Usher among a host of other big names from all genres in the recording industry.  Perhaps Jay just wanted to mingle with the glitterati at the event but chances are he saw an opportunity to be part of a historic moment and his hustler heart just couldn’t say no.  Jay is closing out the first night of the two-day-long event on September 23rd.

Watch the Throne Drops to Mixed Reviews

Kanye West

Image via Wikipedia

The long awaited Jay Z/Kanye West collaboration Watch the Throne was finally released and featured the two in elder statesmen mode rapping about the lifestyles of the rich and famous. Fans who were expecting more block-rocking beats were disappointed at the understated, pensive tone of the album and the lack of truly dazzling wordplay. The album did succeed in being the first rap record to avoid being leaked prior to its proper release date. In other Kanye news, Yeezy made more trademark incendiary comments at the UK’s Big Chill Festival when he said that people treat him “like Hitler.” Coming on the heels of his Holocaust reference off Who’s Gon Stop Me, Kanye’s penchant for hyperbole is likely to continue to get him into hot water.

Though the album isn’t out yet, the hype and legend surrounding the soon-to-be classic Watch the Throne are already enough to pique the curiosity of anyone who’s paying attention. Kanye West alone has enough production credits under his belt to warrant a deeper look into the upcoming release. His most recent effort, the stellar My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, stretched the boundaries of traditional hip hop adding even more layers of orchestral elements and morphing his own sound into something entirely new. Now ‘Ye has enlisted hip hop veterans Q-Tip and RZA in addition to Swizz Beatz, The Neptunes and Mike Dean among others to make sure Watch the Throne has the isht everyone’s been waiting for. RZA in particular has been busy lately. In addition to producing the latest Wu=Tang album Legendary Swords, RZA is now on location in China directing Academy Award winner Russell Crowe in the martial arts film The Man with the Iron Fists. RZA contributed to album opener Dark Fantasy off My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and reportedly mailed in beats from the set in China at Kanye’s request for “some more of that Wu shit.”

The Throne tour dates & tickets has been updated to reflect the changes.
